Pilates instructor pay: what studios pay per class and per hour
By Elara team · Published
By the Elara team. Job ads read October 21, 2026; government wage figures are for May 2025 (US) and 2023 to 2024 (Canada).
Most Pilates instructors in the US are paid by the class, and studios that post their rates mostly offer $40 to $65 for a group class. Across 14 US employers that posted a per-class rate on October 21, 2026, the typical midpoint was $52.50 a class. The government figure most salary pages quote, a median of $22.67 an hour, covers every gym trainer and group fitness instructor and counts every paid hour, so it is not the rate for a Pilates class. In Canada, studios and city recreation departments in British Columbia and Ontario posted hourly rates centered on C$40.
What studios post per class
We read 388 job ads with a stated rate from 54 employers in the US and Canada, each read where the employer posted it: its own hiring system, its listing on Merrithew's instructor job board or, for two Canadian studios, its listing on the federal Job Bank; none came through a job aggregator. One franchisee alone posted 150 near-identical ads, so the table below counts each employer once, at the midpoint of its posted range.
| Employer | Where | Posted rate per class | Midpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| City of Dearborn (group exercise, Pilates among the formats) | Dearborn, Michigan | $20 to $28 | $24 |
| Holyoke YMCA (group exercise, Pilates among the formats) | Holyoke, Massachusetts | $20 to $28 | $24 |
| Pure Pilates Co | Arvada, Colorado | $40 | $40 |
| BODYROK (its own hybrid machine) | 8 ads, 5 states | $25 to $78 | $42 |
| SilkCore Studio | Montclair, New Jersey | $38 to $50 | $44 |
| JETSET Pilates | San Francisco; West Des Moines, Iowa | $30 to $70 | $47.50 |
| Riser Fitness (Club Pilates franchisee) | 150 ads in 6 states | $40 to $70 | $52.50 |
| LN Pilates | Bothell, Washington | $45 to $60 | $52.50 |
| Puppy Sphere | New York | $55 for 40 minutes | $55 |
| Franklin Athletic Club | Southfield, Michigan | $30 to $90 | $60 |
| Lumen Pilates | Chatham, New Jersey | $50 to $75 | $62.50 |
| STRONG Pilates (Momentic Studios; its own hybrid machine) | 6 ads, 4 states | $30 to $120 | $70 |
| The Club at Los Gatos | Los Gatos, California | up to $75 | $75 |
| Equinox, group reformer | Boston; Nashville | $85 to $90 | $88.75 |
The median employer's midpoint is $52.50, and half the employers sit between $42 and $62.50. That is close to an industry newsletter for studio owners, The Business of Pilates, which put reformer pay at $45 to $75 a class in August 2026. A range in an ad is usually a starting rate and a ceiling: at Riser Fitness, most ads run from $40 to $65, and its lead instructors can reach $70.
[solidcore], whose ads never use the word Pilates and whose coaches teach on its own Sculptor machine, starts coaches at $16 to $40 per 50-minute class depending on the city, then moves them to a share of each class's revenue. It is left out of the table for both reasons.
Read these as posted rates, not a census. California supplied 155 of the 388 ads, 77 of them from one franchisee. Its law requires employers with 15 or more employees to put a pay range in job ads (California Labor Commissioner), and ads without a stated rate are not in the sample. A studio that posts its rate may also pay differently from one that does not.
Why the government figures are lower
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics does not count Pilates instructors separately. They fall under exercise trainers and group fitness instructors, an occupation of 322,930 employees in May 2025 that includes gym floor staff and personal trainers.
| May 2025, US | Hourly | Annual |
|---|---|---|
| 10th percentile | $13.85 | $28,800 |
| Median | $22.67 | $47,160 |
| Mean | $25.20 | $52,420 |
| 90th percentile | $39.95 | $83,100 |
The hourly figure is what employers report paying per hour across the whole occupation, gym and personal trainers included, and it leaves out self-employed instructors and contractors, who are paid more by IDEA's count (below). A per-class rate, by contrast, pays for one class. The annual figure is the hourly wage times 2,080 hours, a full-time year, which few Pilates instructors teach. The highest state means were Massachusetts ($72,370 a year, median $31.07 an hour), Connecticut ($66,870), New Jersey ($65,470), California ($62,890) and Washington ($61,800). Ohio ($17.49 an hour), Florida ($18.65) and Texas ($19.65) had some of the lowest medians among large states. BLS projects 7% growth in the occupation from 2025 to 2035, with about 68,000 openings a year.
Canada's Job Bank reports wages for recreation, sport and fitness program leaders and instructors (NOC 54100), a group that also includes community recreation leaders and coaches. For 2023 to 2024, the national median was C$19.00 an hour, with British Columbia highest among the large provinces at C$23.74, Alberta at C$20.00 and Ontario at C$18.50. The ads we found pay well above that: seven Canadian employers posted hourly midpoints from C$36 to C$45, with a median of C$40. All seven were in British Columbia or Ontario; we found no employer-posted Pilates rate elsewhere in Canada.
Salary sites land in between. Indeed averages rates in job postings titled Pilates instructor: $41.02 an hour in the US from 5.6k salaries (updated October 12, 2026) and C$41.89 in Canada from 635. Payscale averages what instructors report: $40.99 from 66 profiles (February 17, 2026). Some hiring systems label a per-class rate as hourly, as Riser Fitness's listings do, so those averages mix the two.
How studios structure the pay
In IDEA's 2015 compensation survey, Pilates and yoga instructors who were employees were paid by the class or session (70%), by the hour (48%) and by the participant (31%); the shares add to more than 100%, so some are paid more than one way. The ads we read show the same mix, and more variety inside "per class":
- A flat rate for the class. "$40/class to start" (Pure Pilates Co); "Pay: $50–75 per class" (Lumen Pilates).
- A base plus a rate for each client. "$65 per class base, plus $3 per participant above five" (River Reformers, Brooklyn); "Base Rate $28 and then $1 Per Person (PP) after first two sign ups" (BODYROK Orlando).
- A rate that scales with class size. BODYROK in Seattle posts $40 to $70 a session, scaling with class size, and several of its other locations pay "based on class size".
- A starting rate, then a share of revenue. "$29 per class plus an opportunity to earn per class revenue share" ([solidcore], Boulder).
- An hourly base plus commission. Life Time's ads give a base of $15.00 to $17.75 an hour plus "incentive pay based on personal production", tied to selling Pilates training programs.
Private sessions are often paid on a different scale from group classes. Equinox posts $45 to $62 a session in all 55 of its ads for private and small-group sessions that state pay, from California to Ontario, against $85 to $90 for a group reformer class, and pays non-teaching hours separately at a rate close to the local minimum wage.
A flat rate, a rate per client and a base plus a rate per client: any two of them pay the same at one class size, and which one is better depends on the class sizes you actually teach. The per-class or per-head guide works out that size, with a calculator, from the studio's side and yours.
Turn a class rate into an hourly rate
A class rate pays for the class, not the time around it. The examples below assume a 50-minute class plus 25 minutes for setup, check-in and questions, so 1.25 hours for a single class, or 1.125 hours each when two run back to back and share the changeover (100 minutes of teaching plus 35 minutes of setup, changeover and wrap-up). They are illustrative assumptions, not measurements; time your own classes.
| Rate per class | One class, 1.25 hours | Two back to back, 1.125 hours each |
|---|---|---|
| $40 | $32.00 an hour | $35.56 an hour |
| $52.50 | $42.00 an hour | $46.67 an hour |
| $65 | $52.00 an hour | $57.78 an hour |
Travel between two studios you teach for separately is usually your own time, so two classes at one studio usually beat one class at each of two.
What a year adds up to depends on how many classes you get. At the $52.50 median and an illustrative 48 teaching weeks, 5 classes a week is $12,600 a year, 10 is $25,200, 15 is $37,800 and 20 is $50,400, before tax. Lead and manager roles are where posted salaries appear: [solidcore] lists $59,134 to $85,522 a year for head coaches, and Equinox $66,300 base for a Pilates manager in New York.
Employee or contractor changes the floor
Studios post both. Riser Fitness's ads list "Employee Status with predictable income" among the job's benefits; four other ads in our sample, at JETSET locations, Pure Pilates Co and LN Pilates, state contractor status. IDEA's 2023 compensation report found Pilates and yoga instructors averaging $35 an hour as employees and $61 as independent contractors; it does not give a sample size. A contractor rate has to cover what an employer would otherwise pay, such as the employer's share of payroll taxes and insurance.
For employees, a per-class rate still has to meet the minimum wage. In the US, the Department of Labor says an employee paid by the piece must receive "at least the equivalent of the required minimum hourly wage rate" (DOL); piece-rate pay is turned into an hourly rate by dividing the week's earnings by the week's hours worked (29 CFR 778.111), and time an employee is required to spend on the job, including time spent waiting for a class to start, generally counts as hours worked (Fact Sheet #22). State minimums can be higher. Ontario's minimum, $17.95 from October 1, 2026, applies whether an employee is paid "an hourly rate, commission, piece rate, flat rate or salary" (Ontario); British Columbia's has been $18.25 since June 1, 2026 (BC). Whether you are an employee or a contractor depends on how the work is run, not on what the agreement calls you; check your own case with your state or province.
What training costs and how long it takes to earn back
| Program | Hours | Tuition |
|---|---|---|
| Club Pilates Teacher Training, comprehensive | 450 | $4,995 |
| Polestar Comprehensive | 450 | $8,200 (currency not stated) |
| Balanced Body Comprehensive | coursework plus student teaching | set by each host studio |
| STOTT PILATES Comprehensive Matwork and Reformer | 310 | not published |
At the $52.50 median, Club Pilates' $4,995 tuition takes 96 classes to earn back before tax, and 125 at a $40 starting rate. Some studios lower the cost: some of Riser Fitness's ads offer a full-ride scholarship "covering the entire $5,000 cost" of the comprehensive program, and a BODYROK ad puts its own training at $1,000 to $1,500.
If you run the studio
Studios that pay instructors hourly can record those hours in Elara: payroll turns clocked time into regular and overtime hours, estimates pay at each person's hourly rate, and, once a manager approves each person's pay period, exports the approved hours as a CSV for the payroll provider. It does not run payroll or work out per-class or per-head pay. The staff scheduling page covers shifts, the time clock and payroll exports.
